“Nagkaroon ng MOA signing ang ating bayan at ang DOST-PHILVOCS kaninang umaga para sa installation of earthquake-detection equipment in key locations in the City of San Pedro.

On behalf of the City Government of San Pedro and our people, we are truly grateful to the leadership of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) in trusting us to be one of their partners in earthquake detection. Interestingly, this partnership is also part of my electoral promise to our people that my administration will pursue a proactive and data-driven governance.

I convey the utmost gratitude of every San Pedrenses to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum and PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol for this opportunity to help the Filipino people in detecting earthquakes in a real-time manner. These equipment surely will boost the capabilities of our CDRRM personnel and will empower them to be active cooperators of PHIVOLCS in exercising their mandates.

Considering that we are just within the peripheries of the West Valley Fault, the installation of an Intensity Meter, Strong Motion Monitoring Station, and a Real Time Earthquake Monitoring Station are all crucial because it will make us more ready in addressing future earthquakes. The data that can be gathered from these tools can help us understand our vulnerabilities and will motivate us to do better disaster contingency plans, especially on earthquakes. Malaking tulong po talaga ito para mapaghandaan ang The Big One. Now that DRRM is being mainstreamed in schools, it can also be an educational material to our students on how our scientists detect and measure earthquakes despite their unpredictability. Who knows, because of these tools, a San Pedrense youth may be inspired to take geology and follow the footsteps that Secretary Solidum himself had taken.

Thus, we hope that these equipment will truly empower every San Pedrenses, especially our DRRM personnel, in the sense that they will be more informed about the nature and behaviors of these natural calamities. On behalf of the people of San Pedro, we assure the PHIVOLCS that we will be faithful stewards of these sophisticated tools.

Umasa po kayo na nasa mabubuting kamay po ang inyong mga ipinagkatiwalang gamit, at aalagaan po namin ito sa lubos ng aming makakaya. We also hope that we will have more partnerships with DOST in the future, in order to start our goals that will not only make us a SMART City by 2032, but also the leading town in the province of Laguna!”
